365 Buddhas

The remarkable element in this thangka is all the tiny Buddhas...365 plus the large one in the center. They are all Shakyamuni Buddha in his Earth-touching pose. This mudra symbolizes the moment of the Buddha's enlightenment (bodhi) under the Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya. It represents the Buddha calling the earth to witness his enlightenment. The gesture signifies the victory over ignorance and the triumph of wisdom, which allowed him to overcome the obstacles and delusions of the mind.
