Dzambhala (also spelled Jambhala or Zambala) is revered as the embodiment of wealth, prosperity, and abundance. He is not merely a figure of material riches, but a deity who transforms the energy of greed and attachment into generosity and compassion. Wealth in this context is not limited to money or possessions; it includes health, vitality, spiritual richness, and the resources needed to support Dharma practice and benefit others.
This thankga depicts Black Dzambala enthroned upon a semi-wrathful yaksha, a nature spirit traditionally associated with wealth, treasures, and the guardianship of hidden riches. Yakshas are also known for being capricious, greedy, or even violent. Its presence beneath Dzambhala reflects how the worldly sources of prosperity — material resources, fertile lands, hidden treasures — are brought under the control of enlightened compassion. Instead of being chaotic or harmful, that power is redirected toward the benefit of beings.
In both hands Dzambhala holds mongeese spitting out an endless streams of jewels, signifying the flow of inexhaustible wealth and abundance.
I had this thangka commissioned for practices that I was doing. My teacher, Lama Dawa Chhodak, was very specific about the layout and details of the painting. I'm ready to part with the thangka and I hope it finds a nice home. It should be placed in a private shrine room, not in a public area.
