Chakrasamvara

Chakrasamvara is a central yidam in Vajrayana Buddhism, especially within Highest Yoga Tantra, whose name means “Wheel of Supreme Bliss.” He embodies the profound union of bliss and emptiness, the heart of tantric realization. Though depicted in fierce, wrathful form—blue in color, crowned with skulls, adorned with bone ornaments, and trampling delusive forces—he is not a deity of rage but a powerful symbol of awakened compassion and transformative wisdom. Often shown in union with his consort Vajravārāhī, Chakrasamvara represents the inseparability of method and wisdom, form and emptiness. His iconography—multiple faces and arms, dynamic posture, and symbolic implements—is rich with tantric meaning, designed to jolt the practitioner out of dualistic perception. Revered in Kagyu, Gelug, Nyingma, and Sakya lineages, the Chakrasamvara Tantra includes advanced yogic practices such as visualization, mantra recitation, and inner heat yogas, guiding the practitioner toward the realization of non-dual awareness. Ultimately, Chakrasamvara is not outside the mind but reflects its most liberated and luminous nature.

This handpainted thangka is done in the Newar tradition, one of the oldest and most influential styles of Buddhist sacred art in the Himalayas.  Newar paintings renowned for their intricate linework, symmetrical composition, jewel-like colors, and richly detailed iconography.
